The Whitney Project presents Cooch's Bridge | The African American Presence

Experience the critically acclaimed jazz suite by Jonathan W. Whitney based on research conducted about the African American presence at Cooch’s Bridge, Delaware’s only Revolutionary War site, but also the homestead of the Cooch family and the family’s mill businesses from 1742 to 2010.

A Celebration of Black Joy celebrates the joy that can be found in the lives of people of color throughout their history in America through storytelling and music. The joy found at churches, BBQs, weddings, births, chance meetings on the street, within children at play, and yes, even going home services, has served as Black America’s greatest protest.

A Celebration of Black Joy

The Wilmington Ballet, in collaboration with “A Celebration of Black Joy,” musical director Jonathan Whitney, will host a celebration commemorating Juneteenth Freedom Day. Storytellers, musicians, dancers, and vendors will fill the Enchanted Woods and Copeland Lecture Hall with performances enriched by and deeply rooted in African American arts and culture.
